THE PLACE NO.1 SANDTON DRIVE Investec Property Group in partnership with Cenacle Properties, developed this prestige office building located adjacent to Sandton City. The design brief challenged NLA “to reflect the stature of the building”. A large embankment, which forms the ‘pedestal’ to the building, was planted with acacia xanthopholoea trees, indigenous tall grasses and groundcovers in a strong geometric pattern. The main courtyard was conceived as a vibrant open space with seating walls, wooden decks and lush planting. Here mostly indigenous plants featuring blue and purple flowers were offset against leafy evergreens to achieve a ‘lush’ effect. The Japanese themed roof garden used a variety of gravels patterns for low maintenance purposes and to be viewed from above. Year round interest along the periphery of the building, was created by using a soft textured surface of indigenous grasses and ground covers punctuated with red, orange and mauve flowers. Large trees and natural boulders ‘salvaged’ from the original site are featured in these areas.
